Cronometro Custom-Built Wheels
We made our name at Cronometro building wheels. Colin O’Brien quite literally reinvented the wheel with his Crono patented wheels, which used the high-tension straight pull spokes that became the standard for the aero builds used today. We continue to sell hand-built wheels, frankly because it remains one of the most satisfying things we do at the bike shop. Its an art, a lost art . . . and man, we’re good at it.
Our favorite wheels these days are built with HED C2 rims and a choice of hubs. These are a high-quality, low-cost alternative to factory builds of similar type. We will recommend spoke count and gauge as appropriate for your use. They are the ideal wheel set for riders looking for a light, but durable and easily repairable wheel.
The value of having your wheels built by us is that it’s all done by hand. We cut the spokes, lace them up, and carefully bring them up to tension. It’s just a matter of quality control. We know that when we’ve built them, it’s all done correctly and evenly, and you have a perfectly round and balanced wheel. The end product is a carefully crafted, extremely durable wheel that is much less likely to go out of true. We have many wheels out there that are 5, 6, 7 years old . . . and showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon!
We recommend two different hubs for this affordable wheel. Our entry model uses the Italian Miche PRIMATO SYNTESI hubs, a relatively light hub that is fully compatible with Sram, Campagnolo, and Shimano 10/11 speeds. The HED C2 rim and black or silver Wheelsmith double-butted spokes complete the system. These wheel sets start at $550.
If you prefer a Shimano Ultegra 6800 hub, we can do that, too. These wheels start at $650.
Both wheels weigh in at approximately 1600 grams, which makes them comparable to the Zipp 30 at a much lower price point.
